According to "The Lanphere and Related Families Genealogy, 1970 Revised Edition", Thomas Lanphear fled from his home in the Province of Languedoc in Southern France in 1572 with many other French Huguenots The Huguenot Church in Paris was formed about 1555. The people in this Protestant movement took the name Huguenot from the name of one of the leading Swiss reformers, Hugue. He fled to Wiltshire in England following the massacre of over 30,000 on the Eve of St. Bartholomew on August 24, 1572. Over 60,000 people were killed in the religious wars instituted by Catherine de Medici. |
