Biographical Information |
1938 |
Rufus died in the 1838 Invasion of Canada. A clandestine group called the Patriot Hunters believed that Canadian citizens wished to overthrow British tyranny. They believed that if they were to attack it would be the spark that set off a revolution. They did not have the support of the government. Both the U.S. and the British governments had no desire to start a war.
They miscalculated badly. Not only did the Canadian citizens not join them they took up arms and worked with the British regulars to repell the invasion.
The invaders who were not killed were captured. Some were pardoned or shipped off to exile in Tasmania. Eleven were executed. |
