Edwin D Morgan letter written to Abraham Lincoln predicting Lincoln's victory in the presidential election. Transcription:
My Dear Sir,
The contest is fast drawing to a close. Every election that has been held since the Chicago convention, as say St Louis, Vermont Maine the corn towns, Penna, Indiana & Ohio has fully met our expectations, all eyes and thoughts seem to be turned on New York. New York will not disappoint us. Her electoral ticket will have not less than 40,000 majority. I believe more, our state ticket will be elected, and we hope to return all our congressmen. We may loose one or two districts The enemy has been aided with money from men who really believe the Union is in danger. It has in some cases alarmed our friends It will do good instead of harm I feel well satisfied with the prospect. Yet when a victory so long looked for, is so near, I cannot but feel solicitous, and shall till the last ballot is in. All will however go right, and when that really takes place, we shall feel compensated for our labor and for efforts.
Very faithfully yours |
