| Rollo Makoben and Fred Engel - August 2, 1950 Pictured is Rollo Makoben and Fred Engel standing outside their Shell service station at 2025 Hickory Grove Road. Engel owned the stock car, which was driven by Bill Spiess. William (Bill) Spiess, Daune Gamber and Ralph Albrecht had all been with Makoben and Engel for a good number of years, making the organization a well-rounded repair shop, specializing in brakes, automatic transmissions and tune-ups. The boys atop the jalopy are Gene Engel, Billy Engel and Jerry Makoben. Rollo and Fred were both racing enthusiasts, Engel having attended the Indianapolis 500 from 1947-1962.
The Makoben & Engel garage and service station held their Grand Opening May 20-21, 1939. Fred and Rollo were brothers-in-law.
On Tuesday night, July 11, 1950, Bill Spiess took third place in the 20-lap semi-main behind drivers Lloyd Brown and Doc Narber. In the feature, Narber of Cedar Rapids took first and Lloyd Brown of Chadwick, Illinois took second.
On Monday, April 23, 1962, Duane Gamber, 29, of 1307 Brown street, suffered severe burns while repairing a car at Makoben & Engel's service station. Gamber had been soldering an oil pan when it caught fire. He was burned when he grabbed the pan and threw it out from under the vehicle. In 1974, Duane became the proprietor of Gamber's Skelly Service, 1435 W. Locust St. |

Pictured here is Jerry Makoben with his 1940 Ford coupe and all the trophies he had won with it. The photo was taken outside the family home, 1922 W. Lombard St. Jerry graduated from Davenport High in 1959. Jerry was the son of Rollo Makoben, owner of Makoben and Engel Service garage, 2025 Hickory Grove Road. Jerry became quite the engine mechanic himself and still rebuilds older engines to this day!
There was one candle on the birthday cake that formed the centerpiece at a supper on Tuesday night, December 30, 1941, honoring Jerry Makoben, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Makoben, 2520 Division Street. Games were played during the evening and Jerry received many gifts. Prizes in the evening's games went to Mrs. William Engel and Alvin Schroeder.
Jerry Rollo Makoben married Judith Kay Jess on November 27, 1965, at St. John's Methodist Church. Judith was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arno W. Jess, 2155 W. Pleasant St. Apparently, Jerry didn't have to go more than two or three blocks to find the love of his life. After their honeymoon, the couple moved into their own home at 2521 N. Howell Street...just a few blocks away.
Jerry retired from ALCOA in September of 1989 after 34 years as a thermal annealing furnace operator. |
