    During the Revolutionary War, he was a privateer, captain and commander of the sloops, "Spy" and "Dolphin." After the American congress ratified the treaty with France, he delivered the news to Benjamin Franklin in France. His crossing of the Atlantic took 27 days. The shortest time then known.

    He served in the campaign against the French and Indians in 1757, in Captain Gallup's company, Colonel Lyman's regiment.
