Soyuz TMA-11 recovery
Soyuz TMA-11 recovery. The Soyuz recovery vehicle suffered a "ballistic reentry" which was blamed on an "unauthorized change to the flight plan". Although there were reports that the explosive bolts used to separate the Soyuz modules before re-entry didn’t work on time. This may have resulted in the descent module and propulsion modules hitting the atmosphere before they separated.

Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, American Peggy Whitson and South Korean Yi So-yeon (first Korean to fly in space) experienced forces up to 8.2 times greater than Earth’s gravity. The capsule landed 250 miles off target. The heat shield had been burnt, communications antenna was lost and, the impact damaged the escape hatch. It took the crew 30 minutes to the the hatch open so that they could use a satellite phone to contact the rescue crew.

Russian Federal Space Agency chief Anatoly Perminov blamed the incident on the female crew members. he said; "You know in Russia, there are certain bad omens about this sort of thing, but thank God that everything worked out successfully. Of course in the future, we will work somehow to ensure that the number of women will not surpass [the number of men].”

Space Shuttle Transport.
Space Shuttle Transport.
Slayton was assigned to the Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) of the Space Shuttle program. The ALT program developed the Space Shuttle Enterprise which was never meant as a spacecraft it was just a testbed for atmospheric flight and landings. He also assisted in developing the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft which was a modified 747.

He retired in 1980, but continued to serve in an advisory role for STS-1, and flew a T-38 chase plane during the landing of STS-2. He formally left NASA on February 27, 1982. In this photo he is the pilot of the T-38 chase plane as the shuttle Columbia is delivered to the Kennedy Space Center.

Lieutenant Walter Lindsey Avery wasn’t an ace. In fact July 25, 1918 was to become his first time in aerial combat. He was flying a SPAD S.XIII, a French biplane fighter. It would have looked very similar to this one flown by American fighter ace Edward Vernon Rickenbacker.

Sperm Whale Attack.
Sperm Whale Attack.
The death of Captain Avery is still being researched. However given what we know this is likely what the last moments looked like. We know it was a violent event by the condition of his body. Given that he choose to leave the ship and be on the scene of the hunt it's likely because it was a Sperm Whale which would have been the most valuable of the whales they hunted. It would also be the most aggressive. A sperm whale's jaw is on the bottom of it's head. To attack something on the surface it would roll over and strike up-side down.

This picture is from the book; The Cruise of the Cachalot : Round the World After Sperm Whales by Frank Thomas, Bullen, pace (facing) 234. Published 1906. While we don't know for sure this is likely what any one who witnessed the incident saw.

Spirit of Carnauba Sikorsky S-38
The "Spirit of Carnauba". A replica of a Sikorsky S-38. The original sank in 1938 at Manokwari Bay in Indonesia. The plane was used by Herbert in 1935 for a 7.500 mile expedition to Brazil to find a sustainable source of Carnaúba wax needed for his business. Herbert thought the journy changed his life. Upon his return he wrote the book "Carnauba Expedition: The Story of a Scientific Adventure by Airplane to Study the Carnauba Palm at Its Source in the Interior of Brazil. He wrote the dedication to his son; "To Sammy, I hope you make this trip some day. It changed my life. Love, Dad." The plane now hangs in the S C Johnson world headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin. In the Background is the S C Johnson research tower. Herbert commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design the S C Johnson headquarters of which the tower is part of.
