| Golf On The Moon. On Feb. 6, 1971 Shepard became the first (and so far only) man to play golf on the Moon. It wasn't planned. In the wake of the failure and near disaster of Apollo 13 NASA certainly wasn't in the mood to play games. With the help of a local golf pro he made a six-iron head that could be attached to a tool they would be using to gather core samples.
He snuck the head and two balls to the Moon inside his space suit. Due to the constraint of the space suit he had to perform a one handed chip shot. There was no still photograph take to commemorate the moment. This is a frame from a low resolution video. Shepard shanked the first ball, but estimated his second shot traveled more than 200 yards. |

| Gondwanaland. The theory of continental drift was first put fourth in 1596. It was rejected by most scientist until the late 1960's this was due to lack of evidence and little understanding of plate tectonics, the driving force of continental drift. Edwin's discovery of Lystrosaurus in Antarctica helped to show the spread of species through land that was once joined. |
