| Edward J Lane Enlistment. He enlisted at Lawrence, Van Buren, Michigan on 6 August 1862 for 3 years or the duration the war. He mustered into Company “C”, 4th Regiment Michigan, Calvary, under Captain Thomas W. Melcher and, Colonel R. H. G. Minty.
The Regiment took part in engagements at Stanford, Oct 14; Gallatin, Nov. 8; Lebanon, Nov 9; Rural Hill, Nov 15; Bairds Mills, Nov 30; Hollow Tree Gap, December 4; Wilson Creek December 11 – 21; Franklin, December 12; Lavergne, December 26; Jefferson, December 27 Nashville Pike, Nov 30; Stone River, December 31st.
In 1863 the regiment took part in engagements at Lavergne, January 1; Manchester, January 5; Harpeth, January 12; Cumberland Shoals, January 13; Bradyville, January 21; Woodbury, January 22; Rover, January 31; Charlotte, Feby 6; Auburn, Feby 19; Liberty, Feb 20; Unionville, March 4; Thompson’s Sta., March 9; Rutherford, March 10; Duck River, March 11; Prosperity, April 2; Snow Hill, April 4; McMinnville, April 21; Stakesville, April 22; Alexandria, April 23; Wartrace, April 29, June 3; Middletown, May 22; Versailes, June 10; Cherry Valley, June 16; Shelbyville, June 27; Hickory Creek, July 4; Tullahoma, July 5; Rock Island, August 2; Sparta, August 9; Sperry’s Mills, August 17; Smith’s Cross Roads, August 21, Sept 16; Reeds Bridge, Sept 18; Chickamauga, Sept 19 – 20; Rosswell, Sept 22; Cottonport, Sept 30; Hill Creek, Oct 3; McMinnville, Oct 4; Chattanooga, Nov 17; Mission Ridge, Nov 25; Cleveland, December 12th.
In 1864 the regiment took part in engagements at Tunnel Hill, January 28; Farmers Bridge, May 16; Arundel, May 16; Kingston, May 18; Dallas, May 24; Villa Rica, May 26; Lost Mountain, May 27; Big Shanty, June 9; McAffee Cross Roads, June 11; Noonday Creek, June 19 – 23; Latimers Mills, June 20; Kenesaw, June 27; Rosswell, July 4, Sept 26; Lebanon Mills, July 14; Stone Mt., July 18; Covington, July 22; Flat Rock, July 27 – 8; Atlanta, August 1 – 14; Fair Oaks, August 19; Jonesboro, August 19; Lovejoy Sta., August 20; Sweetwater, Oct 2; Moses Creek, Oct 3; Lost Mt, Oct 5; New Hope, Oct 7; Stilesboro, Oct 11; Rome, Oct 12; Blue Pond, Oct 21st.
In 1865 the regiment took part in engagements at Selma, April 2; Double Bridges, April 18; Macon. On May 9th they were present at the capture of Jefferson Davis.
He was discharged at Detroit 10 July 1865. He was a member of GAR Post Wadsworth, Chapter Number 49, Lawrence, Van Buren, Michigan.
The regiment was formed with 1,233 men. over the course of the war an additional 984 men joined, for a total of 2,217. Of that number, 3 officers and 48 enlisted men died as a result of battle. Two officers and 341 enlisted men died from disease. |
