Surrender of General Burgoyne.
Surrender of General Burgoyne.
This painting depicting the surrender of the British General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, on October 17, 1777, hangs in the United States Capitol Rotunda.

Burgoyne intended to cut off New England from the southern colonies. An act that would have been crushing to the revolution. Instead Burgoyne's defeat was a major turning point because it secured the French assistance that helped the Americans win the war.
