During landing, Musgrave stood in the cockpit and pointed a video camera out the window. He recorded the plasma streams over the orbiter's hull for the first time. He is the only astronaut to see them first-hand. |

| STS-80 Patch. The STS-80 patch depicts the Space Shuttle Columbia and the two research satellites its crew deployed. The two bright blue stars represent the mission's Extravehicular Activities (EVA). Surrounding Columbia is a constellation of 16 stars, one for each day of the mission.
The first of the two reusable satellites was an Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer used to observe the stars.
The second was the Wake-Shield Facility that allowed for the creation of semiconductor thin films in vacuum conditions that could not be recreated on Earth. |

| STS-9 Crew. STS-9 had the largest shuttle crew to that date. It included the first non-U.S. citizen on a Shuttle flight. Ulf Merbold was the first European Space Agency astronaut and first West German citizen to go into space. |

| STS-9 Landing. While Columbia landed safely two of the shuttles three auxiliary power units caught fire due to a fuel leak. The crew was not aware of the issue. After landing the fire burned itself out but not before causing major damage. The shuttle required extensive renovation. As a result, Columbia would not fly at all during 1984–1985. |
