William arrived on the S.S. Werra (misspelled Wehra in his Declaration of Intention). "Werra" is the name of a river in central Germany that borders the old German states of Hesse and Thuringia. The North German Lloyd line ship was launched July 4, 1882. it was steam powered and had a single screw. She had a maximum speed of 16 knots (14-15 Mph). She carried 125 1st class passenger, 130 2nd class passengers, and 1,000 3rd class passengers. The Werra made her final run August 28, 1901. It was scrapped in 1903.
