| Rock Island Argus 29Oct1912 Pg2. An advertisement that appeared in the Rock Island Argus 29 October 1912, on the second page. I'm not sure why Frank Nagel ended up endorsing this or why the was buying a mass quantities of a concoction that while popular was latter declared by federal agencies to be deceptively labeled.
There's a good chance he knew nothing about this. In 1912 he might have taken a horse west from Dorchester WI to the Mississippi River. That would have taken three days. From there another two days by river boat would have taken him to Moline IL. It's pretty certain he never would have seen this paper.

| Roger Clapp Landing Site. The monument to the landing of Roger Clapp in 1630, along the banks of the Charles River. Located on Charles River Road. Erected by the Historical Society of Watertown in 1947.
The words on the plaque were taken from Roger Clap's journal...
"We went up the Charles River, until the river grew narrow and shallow, and there we landed our goods with much labor and toil, the bank being steep; and night coming on, we were informed that there were hard by us three hundred Indians. One Englishman, that could speak the Indian language (an old planter) went to them and advised them not to come near us in the night; and they harkened to their counsel, and came not. In the morning, some of the Indians came and stood at a distance off, looking at us, but came not near us. But when they had been a while in view, some of them came and held out a great bass towards us; so we sent a man with a biscuit, and changed the cake for the bass. We had not been there many days, (although by our diligence we had got up a kind of shelter to save our goods in,) but we had order to come away from that place which was about Watertown, unto a place called Mattapan now Dorchester, because there was a neck of land fit to keep our cattle on." |

| Rogue 2. After a amassing a long criminal record and becoming the target of a nation-wide man-hunt he wrote a will leaving everything to his wife and fled to Mexico.
As a spectator of the Mexican Revolution he was apparently fearless of the bullets flying around him. Because of this he was offered and accepted a commission in the army. He assembled a band of American outlaw mercenaries and equipped them at his own expense, however they quickly abandoned him as they did not share his apparent death wish.
He became the man of choice when Mexican General Madero wanted something blown up. He destroyed hundreds of miles of railroad, telephone and telegraph lines, crippling transportation and communications. This earned him the nickname "The Dynamite Devil".
There are many, many newspaper articles about his exploits and bravery. At the start of the battle of Bauche his frightened, out-numbered troops were on the verge of deserting. He exposed himself on top of a hill, targeted and shot one of the advancing federal officers. He was immediately killed by the return fire but, he inspired his troops who fought and held the line until Pancho Villa arrived with reinforcements. The battle was a turning point that lead to the fall of the Mexican government.
At the end of the war his body was exhumed from it's hasty Mexican grave and marched through the streets with full military honors with the people celebrating him as a hero. His body was returned to his mother in Massachusetts. Military honors were requested but refused due to his criminal record. |
