| Nathaniel Olds. Nathaniel Olds. Painting held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Painted by Jeptha H. Wade III.
The green-tinted spectacles worn by Olds were designed to protect the eyes from the intensity of Argand lamps used during the early 1800s. These whale oil lamps were about 6 to 10 times brighter than candles. People worried that the bright flames might damage eyesight. |
