| May 6, 1864. A print published by Kurz & Allison about 1897. Grant wanted to avoid confrontation at the wilderness as the dense vegetation would be a hindrance to his superior artillery. For that reason and the fact that the confusion caused by the vegetation could aid him with his lower troop strength is exactly why Lee sought the confrontation. |

| Mayflower Compact After more than two months at sea, the pilgrims arrived at the New England coastline. A storm had driven them more than 220 miles northeast of their intended destination, the mouth of the Hudson River. They sailed from England with a royal patent to settle that region. However with supplies running low and the risk of wrecking the ship high some Mayflower passengers threatened to abandon the colony if they did not land. Refuge was found in Massachusetts harbor. To ensure the colonists continued to respect the rule of law, 41 of the men aboard the ship signed the Mayflower Compact, which outlined the governing principles of the Plymouth Colony. One of the was Thomas Rogers.
The stamp was issued December 12, 1920 to mark the occasion of the Pilgrim Tercentenary. |
