| Jerry Makoben and his Drag Racing Trophies Jerry Makoben and his Drag Racing Trophies
Pictured here is Jerry Makoben with his 1940 Ford coupe and all the trophies he had won with it. The photo was taken outside the family home, 1922 W. Lombard St. Jerry graduated from Davenport High in 1959. Jerry was the son of Rollo Makoben, owner of Makoben and Engel Service garage, 2025 Hickory Grove Road. Jerry became quite the engine mechanic himself and still rebuilds older engines to this day!
There was one candle on the birthday cake that formed the centerpiece at a supper on Tuesday night, December 30, 1941, honoring Jerry Makoben, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Makoben, 2520 Division Street. Games were played during the evening and Jerry received many gifts. Prizes in the evening's games went to Mrs. William Engel and Alvin Schroeder.
Jerry Rollo Makoben married Judith Kay Jess on November 27, 1965, at St. John's Methodist Church. Judith was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arno W. Jess, 2155 W. Pleasant St. Apparently, Jerry didn't have to go more than two or three blocks to find the love of his life. After their honeymoon, the couple moved into their own home at 2521 N. Howell Street...just a few blocks away.
Jerry retired from ALCOA in September of 1989 after 34 years as a thermal annealing furnace operator. |

| Jesse James So many stories have been told that its almost impossible to separate fact from fiction. During their 15-year crime spree, the James-Younger Gang committed 26 holdups making off with more than $200,000 and killed at least seventeen men. As to which gang member was directly responsible for which kill it is mostly speculation.
Before his life of crime he was a guerilla fighter in the Civil War and he no doubt killed many men during that period.
Who he was has become malleable over the years with his part in history dictated by the morals of the day rather than actual facts. He has been considered a war hero and is often seen as Robin Hood of the west although there is no evidence that the crimes he committed benefited anyone outside of his gang.
In the end he was shot in the back of the head by one of his own gang members, who was going to try and collect the bounty that was placed on his head. |
