| Isaac Avery Letter. While leading an assault Avery was struck in the neck by a musket ball. He was bleeding badly, partially paralyzed and, unable to speak when his soldiers got to him. Major Samuel Tate of the 6th North Carolina was by his side. Avery's right hand was useless from the paralysis so, with his left hand scribbled a note and gave it to Tate. It read: "Major, tell my father I died with my face to the enemy. I. E. Avery."
Some sources make the claim this is written in blood. While the paper is blood stained the stains have fade with age. The actual writing was done with a pencil and not blood. |
