Henry Ward Tombstone.
Henry's monument is made of granite it includes a recessed Niche. It is topped with a boulder of "Gowganda Tillite" a type of conglomerate rock that includes quartzite with inclusions of bright orange red jasper. He found the boulder north of Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Henry was cremated with the exception of his brain. The brain was donated to the collection owned by Cornell University. His ashes were paced in a urn that was placed in the niche. Subsequently the urn was stolen. It was later found on cemetery property, but it was empty.
From time to time Cornell has thinned out it's brain collection. At one time the had several hundred brains. At the time of this writing they have 122. About 1984 they offered Ward's brain back to his heirs and they accepted, The university had second thoughts and had the brain cremated. The disposition of those cremains is not know. |
