When is boss was murdered by rival cattlemen he was deputized to serve arrest warrants on his killers. He formed a posse that became known as "The Regulators". One of the other members of the posse was William Boney better known as Billy the Kid. |

- Brewer was killed by a Bison hunter by the name of "Buckshot Roberts", during the Gunfight of "Blazer's Mill", on April 4th, 1878. Five other Regulators were wounded during this battle. Buckshot Roberts was also shot and killed, either by a shot fired by George Coe, whose finger was shot off by Roberts, or Charlie Bowdre.[
