About 1854 John donated land for a one-room schoolhouse that was named Stearns School in his honor. It was built at the corner of Hunt Club Road and Stearns School Road named for John and the school. A second brick building replaced the original wood building in 1917. In 1955 it was sold and used for farm storage. 1n 1995 the boarded up building was beyond repair and, it was demolished. the road is still know as Stearns School. |

John Stearns Settlement. Northern Lake County, Illinois 1877. John Sr. purchased property in Warren Township at the intersection of what eventually became Stearns School Road and Hunt Club Road. It is located in Warren Township, section 8. The land was passed to John Jr. The school house is shown. It occupied the south-east corner of his property. |
