The Swett-Ilsley House |
|
The Swett-Ilsley House The house's original section was built in 1670 by Stephen Swett, who was one of Newbury's first settlers. The house is believed to be the oldest surviving house in the region. In 1911 it was the first property acquired by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) (now known as Historic New England). Over the years the building served as a tavern, chocolate shop, chandlery, and press room. Its location on Newbury’s most traveled road made it a very desirable piece of property. It has one of the largest fireplaces in New England, more than ten feet wide, and containing three beehive ovens. |
