    He believed in independence for Ireland. In June of 1914 he used his yacht to smuggle a 900 Mauser Model 1871 rifles and 29,000 black powder cartridges to the Irish Volunteers movement. These would eventually be used against the British in their war for independence.

    • On September 28, 1922, the Dáil (revolutionary parliament of the self-proclaimed Irish Republic) established martial law powers and declared carrying firearms without a license a capital offence.

      On November 10, 1922, Free State forces burst into the Barton mansion at Glendalough, while Childers was staying there on his way to meet de Valera, and arrested him. He was charged with possession of a small Spanish-made "Destroyer" .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He was convicted by the military court and sentenced to death on November 20, 1922. He was executed on November 24, 1922, by firing squad at the Beggars Bush Barracks in Dublin.
