He received his medical training at the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons. After graduation, he spent the following year in Europe to further his medical education. He returned to Massachusetts to establish a practice. In 1840, he became Superintendent of the Hartford Retreat, a public institution for the care of people with mental illness.
and in 1842, moved to the Utica State Hospital, the first public mental hospital in New York State. He authored books on the subject of mental illness and was well published in medical journals. |
