Biographical Information	In 1845 Joseph left Illinois and traveled the Oregon trail. Two years later his wife and 3 oldest children followed him. In the area they settled Joseph founded the town of Corvallis. Avery Lodge built in 1966 at Oregon State University was named in his honor. This was because he was key in developing the college that would eventually become the state university. In recent years a wave of political correctness alleged that Joseph was connected to a pro-slavery newspaper. In fact his only connection was that he owned the printing press that was used to print the paper. The press was not purchased for this purpose. It was previously used for other papers. A 2017 study made on behalf of the university found no connection between Joseph and pro-slavery groups. Other than the fact that the paper carried a couple of advertisements for his family's store he was not connected to the paper. The study was tainted and in order to carry out the predetermined agenda carried a conclusion that was written not from the facts of the study but, the fact that 13 years previously the Corvallis school board decided not to name a middle school in his honor. Their decision was made from a state of ignorance and was a reaction not to facts but, the allegation alone. In 2018 ignoring the facts of the study the building was renamed. Oddly enough the history remains the same.
