    Magnolia Place was Clarke Avery's plantation house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

    He was captain of a company in the 1st North Carolina regiment, in the battle at Bethel.

    He was lieutenant-colonel of the 33rd North Carolina regiment and, became colonel early in 1862. He was in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was captured at Newbern and kept a prisoner on Johnson's Island, Ohio, for several months.

    He was wounded at Spottsylvania and died of his injuries, June 18, 1864.

    Johnson's Island.
    Johnson's Island is an island in Lake Erie, about 3 miles from the city of Sandusky, Ohio. During the Civil War it was the site of a Union prison camp. After the war it was abandoned. Little exists there now that reflects it's past except for the Confederate cemetery.
