    At the urging of his cousin Albert Uranus came to came to Chicago. In 1865 he opened Crosby's Opera House.

    In May of 1886 Crosby was having financial trouble. He organized an effort to raffle off the opera house.

    The raffle was a nation-wide event. While this ad ran July 19, 1866 in the newspaper the Public ledger out of Memphis, Tennessee it was repeated in newspapers all across the country.

    The drawing was originally scheduled for October 11, 1866. Because of high ticket demand it was delayed until January 21, 1867. 210,000 tickets were sold. The prize list grew three hundred and two prizes, with the opera house as the grand prize.

    The winner chose to sell the building back to Crosby. He managed to raise enough money to pay off the debts he incurred building the opera house and still managed to retain ownership.

    On October 8, 1871 the opera house was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire.
