- This gets complicated....
October 22, 1992 part of Gene's ashes were aboard the NASA shuttle mission STS-52. They were returned to Earth on November 1, 1992 when the shuttle Columbia landed.
One quarter of an ounce of his ashes were part of the first commercial "space burial". April 21, 1997 "Celestis Memorial Space Flights" launched a rocket containing partial ashes of 24 people including Roddenberry. The satellite containing these remains orbited the Earth once every 96 minutes until reentry on May 20, 2002 when perhaps someone in northern Australia cast a wish on what they thought was a shooting star.
The NASA Sunjammer solar sail mission was to carry ashes from Gene, his wife and James Doohan (Star Trek's Scotty) but, it was cancelled in 2014.
Presumably some action will be taken with all or some of the remaining ashes in the future.
