- Alan Shepard was diagnosed with leukemia in 1996. He died from it July 21, 1998. His widow Louise wanted to cremate his remains and scatter the ashes, but she had health issues of her own. She died from a heart attack five weeks later on August 25, 1998. Their family decided to cremate them both. Their ashes were scattered together by a Navy helicopter over Stillwater Cove, by their Pebble Beach home.

On his way to the launch pad and the flight that would make him America's first astronaut he is said to have said; “You should have courage and the right blood pressure if you want to succeed as an astronaut. And four legs … You know, they really wanted to send a dog, but they decided that would be too cruel.” |
