| Donald Merle Makeever Football Player Lawrence "Fats" Day and Don Makeever
Pictured are Davenport High football players "Fats" Day and Don Makeever as they prepared for the big game against Rocky on Friday, October 3, 1941. Well over 11,000 spectators saw the Blue Devils win the game 14-6 through a coordinated running and spectacular passing attack. Don Makeever, backfield ace, completed 12 passes, all but one were caught by either Jim Hogue or Jack Spencer. Davenport High finished the 1941 season undefeated. Don was the son of Merle Makeever, who served as assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Davenport High. Don also played on the baseball team as a pitcher and first baseman, leading the team to Iowa state high school championships in 1940 and 1941. Don served his country during World War II and after his discharge attended college at the University of Iowa. |

| Donald Makeever Football Team Davenport High Football Team Backfield - 1941
This newspaper clipping shows the powerful backs of the 1941 Blue Devils team. Pictured are Don Makeever, Billy Wells, Horace Peeples and Dick Meier. Junior Donald (Don) "Mus" Makeever was the son of Assistant Football Coach Merle E. "Midge" Makeever. Merle was the head baseball coach at D.H.S. as well and Don held down the first base position as a sophomore on the 1941 State Championship team. Don suffered all of his sophomore year with various nagging pains, but he still managed to win two varsity letters. In June of 1941, before entering school in his junior year, Don had an "appendicitis operation." He was laid up for five or six weeks, but came back even stronger for the '41-'42 school year. |
