Major John Andre. Major John Andre (1750-1780) was a member of the British Army. He was instrumental in turning General Benedict Arnold against the colonies and was carrying papers written by Arnold to aid the British in capturing West Point. Had they pulled it off they would have cut off New England from the rest of the colonies.
