The Countess Geraldine Apponyi de Nagy-Appony, a Roman Catholic aristocrat who was half-Hungarian and half-American. Through her American mother she was a decedent of colonist Edmund Rice.

Geraldine was introduced to King Zog I in December 1937, after his sister had approached her on behalf of the king, who had seen a photograph of her. Within days they were engaged to be married. She became known as the "White Rose of Hungary" and, took the title Princess Geraldine of Albania prior to her wedding.

They were exiled when the country was invaded and the communist banned the monarchy. She died at the age of 87 still asserting that her son Leka was the legitimate king of Albania.
