	The Homestead act of 1860 was passed to facilitate the settlement of the west. For a small filling fee an applicant would be allowed to settle upon 160 acres of surveyed land. If they lived there for five years that land would become theirs. Sedgwick paid eight dollars for a plot of land in the state of Nebraska. Union Civil War veterans were allowed to deduct service time from the residency requierment. On this date he filed that he had lived there for four and a half years. He had established a farm that cultivated about 140 acres. He kept pigs and had an acre of fruit trees.
