General Butterfield worked with his brigade bugler to modify the Army's "lights out" call which was a French call known as "Tatoo". He called the new call "Taps".
Later in the was it was used to replace the traditional rifle salute at funerals so that the gun shots would not be taken as enemy fire.
It was officially recognized as "lights out" by the United States Army in 1874. It became a standard component to U.S. military funerals in 1891. In 1901 when he died it was played at General Butterfield's funeral. Years later Horace Lorenzo Trim would compose the lyrics. |

In a series of six major battles known as the "Seven Days Battles", at Gaines' Mill on the Chickahominy River, in Hanover County, Virginia on June 27, 1862, he was wounded but demonstrated bravery that was eventually recognized in 1892, with the Medal of Honor.
The reason given on orders for the award reads: "Seized the colors of the 83d Pennsylvania Volunteers at a critical moment and, under a galling fire of the enemy, encouraged the depleted ranks to renewed exertion." |
