Biographical Information William Dickinson was the first of his direct surname line to arrive in the United States. Together, William and Sarah are believed to have had eleven children, seven of whom reached adulthood. During the summer of 1841, William and Sarah, along with Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth, Frances and William Jr. boarded the sailing ship "Diadem" at Liverpool and sailed for the United States.

The Dickinson family arrived in the United States, after what had to be a very long and trying voyage, in New York in August of 1841. At that time, William listed his occupation as mechanic. Immediately after arriving in the United States, William took his family to Fall Rivers, Massachusetts and began working as a "Block Printer" in what was the hub of the textile industry. During the several years that the family remained in Fall River, three more children were born. On 30 April 1848. The Dickinson family moved west during the mid to late 1940's... possibly due to the "Great Fire" of 2 July 1843 in which over 20 acres was burned to include a heavily populated portion of the town where workers at the textile mills lived.

Land was being sold at this time in Illinois. William bought, on 6 Decmber 1844, sight unseen, 80 acres of land for $100.00. This property was recorded in the LaSalle County Courthouse on 4 July 1846. This land would become the family farm, located just north of Streator, IL. This land was described in the deed as the West half of the Southwest quarter of section 8 of Otter Creek Township (T-31, R-4), in LaSalle County, Illinois. The rest of that section was bought by a fellow block printer named James Morrison. James had a large family, with several sons, one of whom, Adam Morrison, would later own the adjoining quarter section of land and would marry William's daughter, Frances.
