Steve was a guitarist and backing vocalist, He joined the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976. He died in the October 1977 airplane crash that claimed other band members. His older sister Cassie Gaines, a backup vocalist with the band, also died in the crash. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006. |

Street Survivors. Street Survivors is the fifth studio album by the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, It was released on October 17, 1977. Three days later the band's chartered airplane was on its way to a concert when it ran out of fuel and crashed. Gains was one three band members killed. Their assistant manager and the pilots also died. Within 10 days the album went gold and eventually platinum,
Steve played guitar, sang backing vocals, and lead vocals on "Ain't No Good Life", and co-lead vocals on "You Got That Right". |

Van Zant - Gaines Headstones. Lynyrd Skynyrd band members Ronnie Van Zant, and Steve Gaines were buried next to each other (Van Zant left) in Riverside Memorial Park cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. In the year 2000 the graves were vandalized. The monuments remain, but Gaines' family chose to move his ashes to a private location, |
