On October 1, 1947, he was promoted to the rank of general. On October 4, 1958, the missile and space base at Camp Cooke in Lompoc, California, was renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base in his honor. In 2021 it was redesignated Vandenberg Space Force Base in 2021.
