    Biographical Information The Clapps relocated to Saint Louis, Missouri, just before the outbreak of the Civil War. Alfred Clapp became president of the Missouri Mining Company. Initially they maintained a low profile due to community secessionist sentiment. When Clapp's neighbors attempted to seize her Union flag by force in April 1861, she stopped them by declaring; "You can only reach that flag over my dead body!"
