    The purpose of mission STS-9 was to carry the ESA developed Spacelab into space for the first time. Spacelab gave the shuttle a laboratory that could be used for experimentation. it was used on 22 shuttle flights and retired when spaceborne experimentation was moved to the International Space Station.

    While Columbia landed safely two of the shuttles three auxiliary power units caught fire due to a fuel leak. The crew was not aware of the issue. After landing the fire burned itself out but not before causing major damage. The shuttle required extensive renovation. As a result, Columbia would not fly at all during 1984–1985.
