Spacelab. The purpose of mission STS-9 was to carry the ESA developed Spacelab into space for the first time. Spacelab gave the shuttle a laboratory that could be used for experimentation. it was used on 22 shuttle flights and retired when spaceborne experimentation was moved to the International Space Station. |

STS-9 Landing. While Columbia landed safely two of the shuttles three auxiliary power units caught fire due to a fuel leak. The crew was not aware of the issue. After landing the fire burned itself out but not before causing major damage. The shuttle required extensive renovation. As a result, Columbia would not fly at all during 1984–1985. |
