Dorcas's brother, John owned "Freeman's Farm", which was located about 35 miles north-east of Schenectady, New York. The Burleigh's were his neighbors. During the Revolution the Burleighs and the Freemans sided with the British. The first major battle of the Battles of Saratoga took place 19 September 1777. The British won the first round they used John Freeman's house as their headquarters and burned it to the ground when they left. The Continental army pushed back. The farm, its crops and animals were destroyed. John Burleigh was killed there and buried in one of the mass graves. |

Surrender of General Burgoyne. This painting depicting the surrender of the British General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, on October 17, 1777, hangs in the United States Capitol Rotunda.
Burgoyne intended to cut off New England from the southern colonies. An act that would have been crushing to the revolution. Instead Burgoyne's defeat was a major turning point because it secured the French assistance that helped the Americans win the war. |
