- Colonel Shaw was originally buried in a mass grave at Fort Wagner rather than returning his body to Union forces. Commanding Confederate General Johnson Hagood saw it as an insult that he was being buried with black soldiers. His family however believed it was an honor for him to be buried with his soldiers.
Fort Wagner has been subjected to extensive erosion by storm and sea. Much of the site has been eroded away, including the place where the Union soldiers were buried. However, soon after the end of the Civil War, the Army disinterred and reburied all the remains, including presumably those of Shaw, at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. Their gravestones were marked as "unknown".
He has two cenotaphs. One is at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, New York at his family's plot.
Another is at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
