Barnum was a paleontologist. His most significant contribution to the field was the discovery of the first Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. Before his discovery only a few pieces had been found.

During the 1810s Barnum hunted for fossils in the area of Alberta, Canada. Since there were no suitable established travel routes he traveled by barge on the Red Deer River.

Shown standing aboard the scow Mary Jane in 1911 are (Left to right) Henry Osborn, Fred Saunders cook from Stettler, Alberta and Brown.

Unlike most paleontologists he was almost always impeccably dressed, often wearing a tie and topcoat even in the field. In Canada as he didn't let cold weather slow him down, he wore a fur coat.

The third T-Rex that Barnum discovered was 45% complete. It was the first discovered with a complete skull. It would remain the most complete find for 79 years. It is shown here as it was originally mounted and after it's restoration in the late 1990's. The restored mount now has a pose that reflects increased understanding of T-Rex anatomy.
