He was a printer's apprentice. Following that he worked in the newspaper industry until President Abraham Lincoln appointed him postmaster of Buffalo, N.Y. in 1861. He was reappointed in 1865 and served until June 1866.
In 1869 the United States Senate elected him to be Congressional Printer. When the title Public Printer of the United States was created in 1876, he served as the first printer in that title for another year. In 1877, he bought the National Republican newspaper in Washington, D.C. |
