Thunderbirds T-38. Captain Veach flew a T-38 trainer while he was part of the Thunderbirds team. The twin seat training aircraft was pressed into service because of the fuel shortages of the late 70's. The trainer used less fuel that the single seat fighter planes traditionally used by the Thunderbirds.
Another aspect unique to his time in the Thunderbirds was that the tail number was moved to the fuselage and, the tail was used to display the U.S.A bicentennial logo. |

Charles was hired by NASA as an engineer and research pilot at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He was selected as an astronaut candidate in May 1984, and became an astronaut in June 1985. |
