    An auto accident forced him to miss enough high school that he didn't graduate. He joined the Marine Corp and served as an aircraft techincian.

    While completing duty assignments in Korea, Japan and Hawaii, and aboard the carrier USS Wasp in the Far East he earned his GED.

    USS Wasp CVA-18 in the western Pacific Ocean, January 5, 1955 about the time Story Musgrave was deployed there. Sadly it was the same ship that his older brother, Percy was deployed on when he lost his life in a carrier take-off accident.

    Upon compleation of his service he enrolled at the University of Syracuse where he earned a bachelor's degree in mathmatics.

    After completing his medical doctorate, he became a pioneer in the field of aerospace medicine and physiology.

    Eventually he would go on to earn seven graduate degrees and has been awarded 20 honorary doctorates.

    NASA was looking to hire scientist-astronauts. 923 applied. Only 11 were deemed qualified. All 11 including Story were hired. Because the Apollo program was winding down and NASA had no clear future it wasn't expected that any of them would ever fly.

    Hired in 1967 the group of astronauts was officially known as NASA Astronaut Group 6. Unofficially they refereed to themselves the "XS-11", or "Excess Eleven" as they were never expecting to reach space. Eventually all but three had the opportunity to fly.

    In 1992 he was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal which is the highest award that can be bestowed by NASA.

    He ended up becoming the only astronaut to fly on all five space shuttles. At the age of 61 he held the record of the oldest astronaut to have flowen untill Senator John Glen came back to ride on the shuttle.

    He logged 53 days, 9 hours and, 55 minutes in space including 26 hours and, 19 minutes of EVA time.

    The first six shuttle crews were designated A through F. The Challenger crew quickly adopted the name "F-Troop" after the '60's TV comedy of the same name.

    STS-s's primary mission was the deployment of Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-1.

    STS-6 was the fisrt shuttle mission that involved a space walk (EVA). It was the first time astrouauts had worked outside of a spacecraft since a 1973 Skylab mission and, the first time the new Extravehicular Mobility Unit (spacesuit) designed for shuttle missions was used. Story and Donald H. Peterson spent 4 hours and 17 minutes performing tests in the shuttles payload bay.

    STS-51-F was the eighth flight for shuttle Challenger. The patch showes the constellations Leo and Orion in the positions they were in relative to the Sun during the flight. The nineteen stars indicate that the mission is the 19th shuttle flight.

    Their primary mission was to perform scientific experiments using the Spacelab 2 laboratory module.

    Discovery became the first shuttle to fly after the Challenger disaster. It took off and landed as the sun was setting. There are a limited number of photographs availible from this mission due to the fact that they were launching a military satellite.

    During the training for this mission Musgrave suffered frostbite. He had eight damaged fingers. Five on the right hand and, three on the left. Flight surgeons flight surgeons at the Johnson Space Center in Texas diagnosed severe frostbite and Musgrave was referred to a specialist in Alaska for treatment. He made a full recovery and the mission was not affected.

    The STS-80 patch depicts the Space Shuttle Columbia and the two research satellites its crew deployed. The two bright blue stars represent the mission's Extravehicular Activities (EVA). Surrounding Columbia is a constellation of 16 stars, one for each day of the mission.

    The first of the two reusable satellites was an Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer used to observe the stars.

    The second was the Wake-Shield Facility that allowed for the creation of semiconductor thin films in vacuum conditions that could not be recreated on Earth.

    During landing, Musgrave stood in the cockpit and pointed a video camera out the window. He recorded the plasma streams over the orbiter's hull for the first time. He is the only astronaut to see them first-hand.
