  	She was selected as the first participant in the Teacher in Space Project, a NASA program designed to inspire students, honor teachers, and spur interest in mathematics, science, and space exploration. The project allowed for teachers as Payload Specialists. Tragically on January 28, 1986, 73 seconds after it's launch the space shuttle Challenger's booster failed causing the shuttle to break up killing the 7 crew members.
