Humphrey Bogart was an avid sailor. He spent most of his weekends and holidays on his Yacht the Santana which, was named after the Santa Ana winds of southern California. For three years in a row he won the annual "Islands Race" that runs from Long Beach, California, around Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Islands, and then ends at Point Loma in San Diego.
When asked about it he said; "An actor needs something to stabilize his personality, something to nail down what he really is, not what he is pretending to be,". |

In 1947, in response to the the House Un-American Activities Committee Humphrey became part of the "Committee for the first Amendment" a group of actors said to be a "non-political organization campaigning only for honesty, fairness, and the accepted rights of any American citizen."
After their October 27, 1947 appearance in Washington it came out the some of the members of the group were actually members of the Communist party.
