Shay's Rebellion. Shay's Rebellion, August 29, 1786 to June 1787, was an armed revolt to overthrow the government of Massachusetts. Faced with massive debt from the Revolutionary War Massachusetts instituted taxes which were higher that the British taxes that touched off the war.
