The Battle of Big Bethel. The Battle of Big Bethel. One of the earliest land battles of the American Civil War. It took place on the Virginia Peninsula, near Newport News, on June 10, 1861.
Harper's weekly, June 29, 1861. |
Occupation |
Daniel Spencer and Frederick Avery (Oliver's older brother) began the Groton Separator Works in 1847 to manufacture agricultural implements. Charles and Lyman Perrigo started the Groton Iron Works in 1852.
At the age of fourteen Oliver was apprenticed to Lyman and Charles Perrigo as a machinist. After four years he became a journeyman and continued working for them for several years.
After a few years Oliver left the Perrigo brothers and went to Owego and established himself in business. After an interruption for the war he returned to Groton and bought an interest in the Perrigo factory.
In 1877 the Groton Iron Works and the Groton Separator Works joined together and incorporated as the Groton Iron Bridge Works. |

Avery-Bartholomew Bridge The Avery-Bartholomew Patent Railroad Iron Bridge. Patented by Oliver Avery, Jr. and Caleb Bartholomew it is an example technological advances in American metal truss bridge designs during latter part of the nineteenth century.
Built in 1877 the bridge pictured was the first of it's kind. It crossed the Fall Creek at the Elm Street extension in Groton, NY. Built from railroad rails it was inexpensive and quick to build. It was still in use until the late 1970's
It is preserved today for it's historic significance. It is on display at a park across the street from the Groton town building. |
