He was the commander of the 102nd New York Volunteer Infantry. he was severely wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville and, at the Battle of Lookout Mountain his right leg had to be amputated. |

Battle of Chancellorsville. The wounding of General Stonewall Jackson at the Battle of Chancellorsville. While Chancellorsville was considered a Confederate victory, General Jackson was wounded by friendly fire and would latter die of pneumonia brought on by the wound. This was considered a huge blow to the Confederacy and the fact that he was not at the Battle of Gettysburg is thought to be the reason the Confederates were defeated there.
