- John proudly served 29 years in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator, retiring with the rank of captain. He was commander of the U.S.S. Yorktown in 1968 when it retrieved the Apollo 8 capsule after it circled the moon. He and his wife retired to Pinehurst in 1991.
