Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Stephen A Douglas is best remembered as the man who ran against Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln - Douglass debates were held as both ran for Senator from Illinois. While Lincoln would lose the race to Douglas the debates are credited with giving Lincoln the exposure he needed to run for president. |

Forcing Slavery. It is a debated topic as to whether or not Stephen Douglas supported slavery. He did own a plantation on which slaves were used. Perhaps the best that could be said was that he saw slavery as a political issue and not a human rights issue. As a politician he tried to please both sides of the issue. This political cartoon that originally appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1856 leaves no doubt as to the cartoonist opinion. Douglass is one of the men depicted as forcing slavery down the throat of a "Freesoiler" (an anti-slavery party) while in the right corner in the background there is a figure that has been lynched.
Kneeling next to Douglas is President Franklin Pierce. He stood against anti-slavery groups. He supported and signed the Kansas–Nebraska Act which allowed settlers of a territory to decide whether slavery would be allowed within it's borders. He also actively enforced the Fugitive Slave Act. |
